Aberystwyth University was founded as the University College Wales in the year 1872. It was awarded a Royal charter in 1893. The university has been expanding and creating new departments since it was established. For example - In 1875 the department of physics was established which was the first in wales.&nbsp;

In 1878, the first volume of the College Magazine came out. The University also became a founding member of the University of Wales in 1894.
