Cardiff Metropolitan University, previously known as University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC), has an interesting story of origin. Four colleges merged in 1976 to form South Glamorgan Institute of Higher Education which was later renamed as Cardiff Institute of Higher Education. The institute got the power to award its own degrees in 1993 but it was three years later that it attained University College status within the University of Wales and was then renamed as University of Wales Institute, Cardiff. In 2011, another major change happened when UWIC split from the University of Wales and changed its name to Cardiff Metropolitan University. Since then, the university has been providing degrees in its own name in various undergraduate, postgraduate and research programs.
