Established in the year 1974, Deakin University is a public-funded university located in the state of Victoria, Australia. The university came into existence after the passage of the Deakin University Act in 1974. Additionally, the university was named after the second Prime Minister of Australia, Alfred Deakin.

At the time of its establishment, Deakin University was the fourth university in the state of Victoria. The merging of two predecessor educational institutions, i.e., State College of Victoria &amp; the higher education course division of the Gordon Institute of Technology, resulted in the Deakin University. The university opened its first campus and enrolled its first students at the Waurn Ponds, the suburbs of Geelong, in 1977.
