The university was founded in 1882 with the name&nbsp;Benjamin P. Cheney Academy 1882. In 1890, it was renamed the State Normal School at Cheney to train elementary school teachers. The first class of teachers began studying on October 13, 1890. The campus was destroyed twice in 1891 and 1912 and was rebuilt each time. The new building was designed by Julius Zittel which was renamed Showalter Hall in 1940. The university was renamed in 1937 Eastern Washington College of Education. The college grew in size and was then named Eastern Washington State College and added various programs. In 1977, the university got its current name decided by Washington State Legislature.&nbsp;

Cheney is a city in Spokane County, Washington, United States. The population of the city is 10,590 and when the university started functioning offline it had a population of 17,600 people temporarily. The economy of Cheney has its own distinct characteristics and its fortunes and growth are tightly linked to the greater economy of Inland Northwest. Many people work and shop in Spokane but half of the population studies at Eastern Washington University.

Cheney Rodeo Day is an annual event held in July each year since 1967. It has many pubs, bars, cafes offering a vibrant nightlife for students. The city has several well-maintained parks and recreation centres. It has a public school and a university. It also has two libraries- Cheney Library and John F. Kennedy Library. The dental and medical needs are served by two medical clinics and four dentists.&nbsp;
