History

Elms was founded by the sisters of St. Joseph and the Diocese of Springfield in 1897. It was founded as a girls' preparatory academy in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. In 1899, a new property was purchased in Chicopee by Rev. John McCoy and Bishop Thomas Beaven and it was named St. Joseph's Normal College.
