James Madison University is a public research university in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Founded in 1908 as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg, the institution was renamed Madison College in 1938 in honor of President James Madison and then James Madison University in 1977. The university is in the Shenandoah Valley, just west of Massanutten Mountain.

At first, academic offerings included only today&#39;s equivalent of technical training or junior college courses, but authorization to award bachelor&#39;s degrees was granted in 1916.&nbsp;The campus plan was established during this initial development period, and six buildings were constructed.

At the beginning of each fall semester, over 300 of JMU&rsquo;s clubs and organizations come together at Student Org Night. Student Services:

Academic Student Services is located in Sheldon Hall and coordinates the academic affairs response to students who are at risk academically and the re-entry process for students who leave the university while on Academic Probation or Academic Suspension. The office also handles any re-entry student (regardless of academic standing) who has been gone for two years or more.

The unit oversees the Academic Success Program (ASP) and further supports the university by facilitating the development of program specific articulation agreement addendums and coordinates the review and revision of existing guaranteed admission agreements with VCCS institutions and Richard Bland College.

Awarded with monies from the annual art auction and contributions from alumni, faculty, students, and patrons of the arts. Recipients shall be incoming freshmen or undergraduate art majors who show artistic accomplishments in art history or art education. Recipients shall be chosen by a seven member committee including the Art Department Head, four art faculty, Dean of School of Fine Arts and Communication, and a JMU Faculty member appointed by the Department Head.

Art Scholarship

Established with a gift from the Estate of Betty Moxley Snyder.

Scholarships are intended to benefit students who are in good standing and admitted as a full-time student at James Madison University in a four to five year graduation track. First preference is given to residents of Buena Vista, VA or Rockbridge County, VA. The Director of Scholarships selects a student, preferably an entering freshman, each year. As long as the student maintained good standing with the university, he or she may received this tuition-scholarship each year up to, but not exceeding four years, unless a fifth year is applicable to the degree sought.

Betty Moxley Snyder Memorial Scholarship

An endowed scholarship established by Blair Chandler Grappone '87 & Mike Grappone '87 and Dr. Wallace L. Chandler, the Blair Chandler Grappone '87 & Mike Grappone '87 Scholarship Endowment will provide the Office of Admissions with financial resources to encourage enrollment at James Madison University by outstanding students who have been offered admission to the University. Incoming students who have demonstrated academic excellence and leadership potential - and, who have expressed an intention to pursue a course of study in finance or another business-related discipline - may be considered for this scholarship. Working collaboratively with the Office of Admissions, the University's Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships will oversee the awarding of this scholarship annually, guided by the above criteria. Beyond these criteria, the appointment of a student as a Grappone Scholar shall follow the University's guidelines for the awarding of scholarships.

Blair Chandler Grappone '87 & Mike Grappone '87 Scholarship Endowment

An endowed scholarship established with gifts from Universal Corporation's Director's Charitable Award Program (DCAP), whereby, the Director requests Universal Corporation to restrict their gift to the Carrier Scholar's Fund, a scholarship initiative envisioned in 1998 by Ronald E. & Edith J. Carrier. The purpose of this scholarship is to affect the decision of a prospective incoming freshman student to attend JMU.

An endowed scholarship established February 1990 in memory of Catherine King-Frazier as an endowed scholarship for deserving Geology freshman students for their second semester at JMU. Recipient(s) must be first year freshman or transfer freshman students.

Catherine King-Frazier Memorial Scholarship

Through this scholarship fund, Mr. Good intends to provide financial resources annually to an outstanding graduate of Harrisonburg High School who has been accepted and enrolled as an incoming freshman at James Madison University. To qualify as a Good Scholar, the recipient must be: 1) An outstanding graduate of Harrisonburg High School (HHS) in Harrisonburg, VA 2) Enrolled as a full-time, incoming freshman student at James Madison University.

Charles Edwin Good ('62) Scholarship Fund

An endowed scholarship fund established by Frank and Carolyn Rader in memory of their daughter, Cheryl Lynn Rader, who was JMU's Assistant Director of Financial Aid and an alumna of the University. This scholarship is intended to benefit a JMU student from Rockbridge County with first preference given to a graduate of Parry McCluer High School in Buena Vista, VA. The recipient must demonstrate financial need as determined by the JMU Office of Financial Aid. The recipient will be selected as an incoming freshmen and will continue to receive this scholarship as long as he/she remains an active, full time student at JMU and continues to demonstrate financial need. If at any time the student recipient fails to meet the requirements or when the student graduates, a new incoming freshman student will be selected based on the established criteria.

Cheryl Lynn Rader Memorial Scholarship

This endowed scholarship is intended to benefit a JMU Student in the Bachelor of Individual Studies (BIS) program who is in good academic standing. Preference being given to students based on merit. The student may be an entering BIS special student or a current undergraduate BIS major. The recipient must have completed a BIS scholarship application. The Director of the Bachelor of Individualized Study program will make the selection at the recommendation of the BIS scholarship selection committee. The Director of BIS will administer this scholarship.

Elizabeth M. Finlayson Scholarship

This Scholarship created by the gift of Gilbert Bland shall be for underrepresented students at James Madison University - including but not limited to first generation college students, students who would enhance the diversity of university's student body, students who merit scholarships on the basis of their academic or other (non-athletic) achievements and accomplishments. The key priorities to consider in the naming of students as Gilbert T. Bland/Burger King Scholars is identifying students whose talent s, skills and abilities enable them to enrich the James Madison University community and who will engage (or are engaged) in studies in Education or Hospitality/Tourism Management.

Gilbert T. Bland/Burger King Hospitality/Tourism Management Scholarship

An endowed scholarship established by Mary Ann Grigg in memory of her mother Helen Sharpes, who was an administrative secretary at JMU. This scholarship is intended to benefit a JMU student from Rockingham County with a minimum GPA of 2.5. The scholarship will be awarded to an entering freshman (but not part of the early action process) and will remain with that student until graduation as long as the selection criteria continues to be met. If at any time the student recipient fails to meet the requirements or when the student graduates, a new entering freshman will be selected based on the established criteria.

Helen Sharpes Scholarship Fund

An endowed scholarship established by the JMU Honors Advisory Board to benefit an entering JMU Freshman. This scholarship is to be extended to the applicant for the purpose of affecting their decision to attend JMU. Therefore, an early offer is required. The student must be a member of the JMU Honors College and meet all of their stated criteria. The recipient will receive this scholarship for their freshman year only as long as they continue to meet the selection criteria. Each year a new entering freshman will be selected. This scholarship will be administered by the JMU Scholarship Office.

Honors Advisory Board Scholarship

An endowed scholarship named for Dr. Joanne Pearson honoring her twelve years of service to JMU and the dietetics program. The scholarship is intended to benefit a JMU student in the dietetics program, with preference being given to a student who is experiencing financial difficulty. The student may be an entering freshman, an undergraduate, or graduate student. The recipient must complete a scholarship application and be selected from other applicants by the faculty of the program of Dietetics. In addition, the recipient must maintain satisfactory academic progress. This scholarship will be administered by the program of Dietetics within the Health Sciences department.

Joanne Pearson Dietetics Scholarship

An endowed scholarship established by Dr. John H. Harding, Jr., DDS of Burgess, Virginia in honor of his father, John H. Harding, for his encouragement, love and support. Recipients must be selected from one of the four counties of the Northern Neck of Virginia (Northumberland, Lancaster, Richmond and Westmoreland). However, any descendent or relative of John H. Harding shall be given preference and can be from any area of the US. Applicants shall be recommended by JMU Office of Admissions. Awards shall be made by the JMU Office of Financial Aid. Recipients shall have completed High School in good standing and have a serious sense of purpose in acquiring a college education. Income shall be expended on an annual basis as scholarship awards, one half each semester.

John H. Harding Memorial Scholarship

An endowed scholarship established by John L. and Kay D. Neff that is intended to benefit JMU students who exhibit outstanding academic achievement and are enrolled full-time or a high school student applying for full-time admission on a four- year graduation track. The university will determine outstanding academic achievement. First preference shall be given to students attending the university who are residents of Bath County, VA. Secondary preference shall not be enacted until three scholarships have been granted to Bath County residents. Secondary preference shall be given to students attending the university who are residents of Augusta County, VA. The recipient must be having difficulty (or, in case of an entering freshman, will have difficulty) meeting the educational expenses at JMU and must not be receiving any funds through athletic scholarships. Preferably, there will be a recipient in each of the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes. This scholarship will be administered by the James Madison University Director of Scholarship and the Financial Aid Office.

John L. & Kay D. Neff Endowed Scholarship

An endowed scholarship fund established at Homecoming 1979 by the Black Student Alliance to be used to award a scholarship to a deserving, black incoming freshman. Originally named the Black Student Scholarship, the name was changed in 1998 to provide a memorial tribute to Dr. Lacy Daniel who faithfully advised the Black Student Alliance during his tenure at JMU. The recipient must meet JMU's standards for acceptance; be a citizen of the United States; and have exhibited special accomplishments in extra-curricular activities. The recipient(s) may receive the scholarship only once. The recipient will be chosen by a committee.

An endowed scholarship that is intended to benefit a full-time JMU student who has demonstrated a capacity to make a contribution to the visual and/or performing arts community at JMU. Priority will be given to students from Patrick County, Virginia, from a single parent household. If candidates are not available to meet the aforementioned criteria, qualified students from households with other parental composition and from other geographical areas will be considered. A student may be selected as a freshman and continue to receive the scholarship until graduation, as long as the selection criteria continues to be met. Recommendations may be made from the JMU visual and performing arts departments and the Coe family. Administration of the scholarship and the final selections will be completed by the JMU Scholarship Office.

Marlene & Peter Coe Visual & Performing Arts Scholarship

An endowed scholarship established by Chris & Donna Wollenberg, and their family in memory of Donna Wollenberg's mother, Maxine Jobst. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance for incoming freshmen who have exceptional collegiate potential but also have severe financial hardships. Specifically, the Donor intends that candidates for this scholarship shall be in the top 15 percent of their high school graduating class, have SAT scores of 1100 (or the equivalent on the ACT, as the case may be), have participated in a superior program of academic study while in high school, have demonstrated a commitment to extra-curricular endeavors at a leadership level of involvement, and have a demonstrated financial hardship, as determined by the University's Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships. To elaborate - the Donor wishes for this scholarship to help students attend James Madison University who are from low income families and who demonstrate that their estimated family contribution to their education will be extremely low, if anything at all. To the extent appropriate, the Donor encourages the consideration of ancillary statements and documentation from and on behalf of a student who is a candidate for this scholarship (e.g., from official of the student's high school) which may support a determination of a particular student's financial circumstances. Further, once a student is appointed a Maxine Jobst Scholar, the scholarship may be renewed for up to four successive academic years; provided, however, that the student must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.8 (on a 4.0 scale) and remain in good standing in all respective with the University. Should the student's cumulative grade point average fall below 2.8, the student shall be given one semester to raise it back to the 2.8 minimum; and, should the student not do so, the student shall lose the scholarship immediately so that it may be awarded to another student. Also, as the scholarship is intended solely for undergraduate study, the scholarship shall conclude upon the student's completion of requirements for a baccalaureate degree, without regard to whether the student would otherwise be eligible to renew the scholarship for one or more additional years. Beyond the above criteria, the appointment of Maxine Jobst Scholars shall follow the University's guidelines for the awarding of scholarships.

Maxine Jobst Memorial Scholarship Endowment

An endowed scholarship established by Donna Burcham Fowlkes '72 and J. Thomas Fowlkes in memory of Ola Belle Garber Cline '16 and in honor of her daughter, Phyllis Cline Burcham. This scholarship is intended to benefit a JMU student from Southwest Virginia (the counties of Lee, Scott, Wise, Smyth, Washington, Bland, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Carroll, Pulaski, Wythe, Dickenson, Russell, Tazewell, and Buchanan and the cities of Bristol, Galax, and Norton, VA). The students must exhibit financial need and preference goes to the son or daughter of someone in the education industry (teacher, administrator, counselor, public, private, elementary, secondary, or higher education). The recipient must file a Free Financial Aid Form by March 1 of the enrolling year. The recipient will be selected as an entering freshman and will continue to receive the scholarship as long as he/she remains an active, full-time student at JMU and continues to meet the scholarship requirements. If at any time the student recipient fails to meet the requirements or when the student graduates, a new entering freshman student will be selected based on the established criteria. After the scholarship is fully funded, we would like the earnings to provide four scholarships each year, one for a member of each class (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior). The Director of Scholarships will select the scholarship recipient.

Ola Belle Garber Cline Scholarship Fund

An endowed scholarship that is intended to benefit an admitted first year student, from the Philadelphia Area Alumni Chapter region, who will attend JMU in the Fall. The recipient must be in good academic standing. This scholarship will be administered by the JMU Alumni Office. The Alumni Office will mail an application to all qualified students. Those applications that are returned will be submitted to the Philadelphia chapter. The chapter will select the winner based on merit, not financial need.

Philadelphia Area Alumni Chapter Endowed Scholarship

Established by Sarah Bane Williams in honor of her mother, Sarah Elizabeth "Betty" Umphlette Bane '52, for her outstanding life achievement and her lifelong love of Madison College and JMU.

This scholarship is intended to benefit an entering JMU freshman from the County of Halifax, Virginia. In addition to having a 3.5 grade point average, the student will exhibit outstanding extracurricular and service achievement. A new scholarship recipient will be selected each year.

The JMU Director of Scholarships will select the scholarship recipient. Should there be no qualified students from the County of Halifax, this fund may be used to assist a freshman from the City of Suffolk. Should there be no qualified students from the City of Suffolk, this fund may be used to assist a freshman from the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Sarah Elizabeth Umphlette Bane Scholarship

An endowed scholarship established by Joan Yablon in memory of her daughter, Suzanne Pollack, a 1990 graduate of the university. This scholarship is intended to benefit a deserving student from the Baltimore, Maryland area. The recipient must have and maintain a minimum 2.5 grade point average and must demonstrate financial need as determined by the JMU Office of Financial Aid. The recipient will be selected as an incoming freshman with a high school grade point average of 2.75 and will continue to receive this scholarship as long as he/she remains an active, full time student at JMU and continues to meet the scholarship requirements. If at any time the student recipient fails to meet these requirements or when the student completes their undergraduate study and graduates, a new incoming freshman student will be selected based on the established criteria.

Suzanne Pollack Memorial Scholarship

An endowed scholarship established by Sheryl T. Watson '65 and John R. Watson, Jr. in appreciation of the education Sheryl received during her undergraduate years at Madison College and of the many benefits derived from the emphasis placed upon education by their parents. The Tadlock-Watson Endowed Scholarship, is to provide financial assistance for students with disabilities. The Watsons understand from personal experience that these students face challenges unknown to most college students. They want to relieve disabled students of some of the stress that is inherent in their college experience, most significantly that stemming from the lack of financial means. This scholarship will provide financial assistance for students with learning disabilities. Through this endowed scholarship, funds are provided annually to one or more undergraduate students who have a documented disability and who in their first year as recipients of this scholarship demonstrate a need for financial assistance, as determined by the University's Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships.

The appointment of a student as a Tadlock-Watson Scholar shall follow the University's guidelines for the awarding of scholarships; provided, however, that the following criteria shall be part of the decision-making process. Specifically: The scholarship will be administered by the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships, in coordination with the University's Office of Disability Services; Preference will be given to students with documented disabilities, with priority given to students with documented learning disabilities. The scholarship shall be awarded initially on the basis of financial need, as determined by the University's Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships, however, financial need will not be a factor in the renewal of this scholarship for subsequent years. Preference will be given to students who are entering freshman. If there are no qualified entering freshmen, the scholarship may be awarded to students who are currently enrolled or to entering transfer students. The scholarship will be renewed for as long as the student takes to complete a course of study sufficient to receive an undergraduate degree, so long as the student remains in good standing with the University and completes such studies within six years of entering the University. That is, for a freshman completing a first year of study at the University, this means that the scholarship may be renewed for up to five additional years, provided, however, that an exception to this limitation may be applicable for situations in which a student attending the University on a plan approved by the University's Office of Disability Services may require more than six years to complete degree requirements - and, in such cases, the six-year maximum term for this scholarship shall be waived. The Donors intend that this scholarship shall assist students named as Tadlock-Watson Scholars by displacing other forms of non-grant aid - to the extent that the available scholarship funds allow - beginning first with work-study aid, then student loans, and other such aid.

Please note that while it may be the case that Tadlock-Watson Scholars who have completed their first year of study do not need to demonstrate financial need because such need may not be a factor in the renewal of this scholarship (as noted above), it is noted here that the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships - as a matter of practice - would not authorize a student to receive scholarship assistance in excess of the annual cost of attendance at Madison. Therefore, in any such year - in which the needs of the primary Tadlock-Watson Scholar(s) may be met in full and there are available scholarship funds remaining, it may be that such remaining scholarship funds would be awarded to additional eligible students - perhaps for just that one year - until all scholarship funds available for disbursement in the particular year are expended.

Tadlock Watson Scholarship

An endowed scholarship established in honor of Dr. Robert E. Holmes, who served as Dean of the College of Business from 1983 to 1995.

The Dr. Robert E. and Diane M. Holmes Endowed Scholarship

An endowed scholarship established with a gift made by Thomas A. Dingledine to create the Thomas A. Dingledine Scholarship Endowment for Achievement in Academics & Service.

Although Tom is not a graduate of James Madison University, he feels strongly connected to the university through the Dingledine family. For many, the name "Dingledine" is synonymous with the history of the institution. Tom is the grandson of Raymond and Agness Dingledine, Sr., or "Mr. Ding" and "Mama Ding" as they were affectionately known to their students. Dr. Dingledine was a faculty member for twenty-five years in the Department of History. Mrs. Dingledine was a beloved housemother for whom Dingledine Hall was named in 1969. Raymond Dingledine, Jr., Tom's uncle, was on the faculty for thirty-five years as head of the Department of History and wrote the definitive history of the university's first fifty years. Tom is not an educator by profession but sees philanthropy as the way to participate in a significant way in the educating of deserving students. The Thomas A. Dingledine Scholarship Endowment for Achievement in Academics & Service is the third endowment they have created at James Madison University. The first, the Agness Dingledine Memorial Scholarship, honors the memory of "Mama Ding", while the Raymond C. Dingledine, Sr. Endowment for Leadership Scholarship was created to commemorate Tom's grandfather while honoring his father, William Dingledine. Each of these scholarships recognizes students who make service a central theme in their lives even as they excel in the classroom.

Tom Dingledine's intent in creating the Thomas A. Dingledine Scholarship Endowment for Achievement in Academics & Service is to give the university the means to recruit, as freshmen, students with the same qualities as those now being honored with the scholarships in Tom's grandparents' names. This is the first, four-year scholarship to be established within the Bluestone Scholars Program at James Madison University.

The Scholarship will be administered by the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships in coordination with the Office of Admissions' Bluestone Scholars Program (as to the annual selection of the Dingledine Scholars); provided, however, that the following additional considerations shall be taken into account:

In addition to demonstrating their excellence in academics, these Dingledine Scholars also will have demonstrated a commitment to helping others, as defined and ascertained by the scholarship selection committee.

In any given year, the scholarship amount will be the same for all students who receive this scholarship, without regard to the student's residence; provided, however, that the university may choose to supplement the scholarship award for out-of-state students with funds from other sources.

The in-state/out-of-state distribution of awardees will approximate the geographical make-up of the overall student population.

While financial need is intended to be a factor in the determination of the students who will receive this scholarship, the Donors direct that the scholarship selection committee shall have discretion to incorporate this factor into their decision process in a manner of the committee's choosing; provided, however, that the Donors expect that at least half of the scholarships awarded in a given year shall go to students for whom receipt of this scholarship would make a tangible difference in their capacity to attend James Madison University.

The applicant's stated professional objective shall not be a factor in the evaluation of scholarship applicants.

To have the scholarship renewed from year to year, a recipient must sustain a high level of involvement at James Madison University and in the community. The criteria for evaluating such involvement shall be defined and determined at the discretion of the program mentor, who initially will be the university's senior vice president for student affairs.

The scholarship selection committee shall be appointed annually by the Director of Financial Aid & Scholarships for James Madison University.

Beyond the above criteria, the appointment of a student as a Thomas A. Dingledine Scholar shall follow the University's guidelines for the awarding of scholarships.

Thomas A. Dingledine Scholarship Endowment for Achievement in Academics & Service

An endowed scholarship established by Joyce M. Wood and Marian Wood Goodloe intended to benefit JMU students from the state of Virginia. The students must have and maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average and demonstrate financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid. The recipients will be selected as an incoming freshman with a high school grade point average of 3.0 and will continue to receive the scholarship as long as they remain active, full time students at JMU and continues to meet the scholarship requirements. If at any time the student fails to meet the requirements or the student graduates, a new entering freshman student will be selected based on the established criteria.

Warren and Elva Wood Scholarship

This four-year $2,500 annual scholarship is awarded to the most promising journalist entering JMU as a first-year student. The award recognizes the student's demonstrated commitment to journalism, as well as promise of high academic achievement at JMU. The scholarship is paired with a Madison Award for Academic Excellence making the scholarship package worth about $12,000 per year for the most recent recipient. In addition, the Byrd-Mims scholar will be directly admitted to the journalism concentration in the School of Media Arts & Design instead of having to apply during the school's regular admission period in the spring.
