Kwantlen Polytechnic University started out as Kwantlen college in 1981. It was formed by the separation from Douglas College and there was a contest conducted to choose the new name for the institution. In 1988, it was renamed the university, and later In 1995, the college was allowed to offer degrees in its own name.
