Northumbria University was formed by combining the College of Art & Industrial Design, Rutherford College of Technology, and the Municipal College of Commerce in 1969 and Northumbria wasn't even its name in its early days. It was called Newcastle Polytechnic and in 1992 it got the current Northumbria University name. Coming to 2000 the University was the largest one in North of East England.
