History

The University of Dundee has its roots in the earlier&nbsp;University college&nbsp;based in Dundee and the&nbsp;University of St Andrews. During the 19th century, the growing population of Dundee significantly increased demand for the establishment of an institution of higher education in the city and several organisations were established to promote this end, including a University Club in the city.

There was a significant movement with the intention of moving the entire university to Dundee (which the Royal Commission observed was now a &quot;large and increasing town&quot;) or the establishment of a college along very similar lines to the present&nbsp;United College. Finally, agreement was reached that what was needed was expansion of the sciences and professions, rather than the arts at St Andrews.

Campus safety

The Campus Security Centre is located behind the Main Library, just off Airlie Terrace. This location is normally staffed 24-hours a day, unless all the on-site Security Officers have left to attend a serious incident. In the rare event that the Security Centre is not manned, Security can always be reached by telephone. Dundee is a coastal city on the Firth of Tay estuary in eastern Scotland. Its regenerated waterfront has 2 nautical museums: RRS Discovery, Captain Scott&rsquo;s Antarctic expedition ship, and 19th-century warship, HM Frigate Unicorn. North of the water, Verdant Works is a museum celebrating the city&rsquo;s jute-manufacturing heritage. Dundee recorded the highest number of crimes in Scotland throughout 2020, with an increase in drug and violent crime.Police in Tayside recorded a near 12 per cent increase in crimes linked to drugs and violence during the past year.Local officers said an increase in pro-active policing meant more crimes were being detected.An increase in the number of Dundee crimes&nbsp;related to drug supply, offensive weapons and serious and organised crime contributed to 4,669 crimes in 2020/21&nbsp;compared to 4,183 the previous year.

The climate, like the rest of lowland Scotland, is&nbsp;Oceanic Mean temperature and rainfall are typical for the east coast of Scotland, and with the city&#39;s sheltered estuarine position, mean daily maxima are slightly higher than coastal areas to the North, particularly in spring and summer.The summers are still chilly when compared with similar latitudes in continental Europe, something compensated for by the mild winters, similar to the rest of the British Isles.
