History

Simmons University was founded as Simmons college that was founded in 1899. Its founder, John Simmons was a wealthy clothing manufacturer based in Boston and had the belief that women should become independent by integrating their learning experience with their work prospects. Along with a number of other higher education institutions, Simmons is a part of the Colleges of the Fenway consortium. Simmons College officially changed its name to Simmons University as the institution&#39;s structure changed.

The gated residence of Simmons university consists of nine brick resident halls which provide the perfect college experience to students outside of college. The Simmons University Boston Scholarship is a competitive merit award that recognizes students from Boston public high schools and charter schools who have attained academic excellence.

Boston Scholarship

Annually, Simmons awards a variety of merit-based scholarships including three Director's Scholarships to Children's Literature students. All degree applicants are automatically considered for merit-based scholarships. Awards are based on a holistic review by the Admission Committee of the "merit" or strength of an application in comparison to all other completed and eligible applications for that same semester. Recipients may be required to take a certain number of credits and must maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 during the semester(s) for which they are awarded.

First-Year Scholarships

The Simmons Distinguished Scholar Award is a full scholarship, covering tuition, room, and board. Applications are due December 1st.

Students graduating with their associate's degree (AA/AS) from an accredited community college will be eligible for our Transfer SUCCESS program, which can range up to $22,000 per year

Simmons University Community College Excellence Scholarship (SUCCESS)

The Virginia Haviland Scholarship covers one half of total tuition for all graduate courses in Children's Literature. Virginia Haviland devoted her life to promoting excellence in literature for children and young adults. As the "librarian of Congress for children," Ms. Haviland was extensively involved in the Library's Center for the Book. Recognized by the Regina Medal and the Grolier Award, Haviland lectured widely on children's literature. She served on many children's book award committees, was a Horn Book reviewer, and remains one of the most influential figures in children's literature.

The Virginia Haviland Scholarship

Dix scholars are automatically considered for the Dorothea Lynde Dix Scholarship when they apply to Simmons. They do not require a separate application and are part of the admission process. (This scholarship is up to $10,000 for the first four consecutive semesters of enrollment).

The Lee & Low...and Friends Scholarship enacts a shared organizational commitment to increasing diversity in children's book publishing. The largest multicultural children's book publisher in the U.S., Lee & Low Books leads the movement for diversity in publishing. With them, Simmons is committed to expanding venues of access and increased equity in the industry by expanding the opportunities for graduate study in the field.

The Lee & Low...and Friends Scholarship

Children, grandchildren and siblings of Simmons graduates automatically qualify to receive an Alumnae Scholarship of $2,000 per year, renewable for four years.
