SFU is a public research university in British Columbia, Canada, having three campuses in Greater Vancouver: Burnaby (main campus), Surrey, and Vancouver. The main Burnaby campus on Burnaby Mountain, 20 km from downtown Vancouver, was founded in 1965 and now has over 30,000 students and 160,000 alumni. The institution was established in an effort to broaden access to higher education in Canada.

SFU is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the International Association of Universities, and Universities Canada, among others.&nbsp;

SFU has also collaborated with other universities and government agencies to run joint research facilities such as the TRIUMF, Canada&#39;s national particle and nuclear physics laboratory, which houses the world&#39;s largest cyclotron, and the Bamfield Marine Station, a major teaching and research facility in marine biology.
