Southeast Missouri State University, commonly known as SEMO, is a public-funded university located in the city of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, United States. The university got its foundation&nbsp;established in the year 1873 by some that-time prominent businessmen and politicians&nbsp;as a Normal School to train high school graduates to be teachers. The first batches were taught at the nearby Lorimier School, then it got shifted to the main building of the university in the year 1875,&nbsp;which took around two years to get fully constructed.

In the year 1946, the institution was renamed the &quot;Southeast Missouri State College&quot; due to the expansion of its curriculum, student strength, and its recognition all over the nation. Later in the 1970s, the institution shifted its focus from training teachers to providing full-time courses in different fields of study like business, the liberal arts, and nursing. To accomplish this vision, the institution expanded its campus strength, more buildings as well as an&nbsp;increase in student population. All these expansions and development resulted in gaining a university charter, and thus the institution became the &quot;Southeast Missouri State University&quot;.
