Southern Illinois Institution (SIU) was formed as Southern Illinois Normal University in 1869 as a teacher's college to offer teacher education for the rising number of public schools in southern Illinois, and it was the state's first public university to accept women. The institution grew in the early twentieth century, and its name was changed to Southern Illinois University in 1947. Application Procedure

At the time of admission, applicants are automatically considered for merit-based scholarships based on their qualifying credentials. Admitted students can use the Saluki Scholarship Portal to apply for a General Scholarship and various additional applications for college, school, or major. Some of the available scholarships are:
