It has its roots in The Institution For The Diffusion Of Useful Knowledge, founded in 1828. Subsequently, known as Harris Art College, then Preston Polytechnic, then Lancashire Polytechnic, in 1992 it was granted university status by the Privy Council. The university is the 19th largest in the UK in terms of student numbers.

The Journalism Innovation and Leadership Programme (JILeaders) at the University of Central Lancashire is offering PGCert tuition-fee scholarships for news media professionals that are funded by Google News Initiative (GNI). Successful applicants will be highly motivated leaders eager to innovate, grow their confidence, their networks and career prospects.

The JILeaders Programme equips forward-thinking media professionals to successfully lead teams, projects, and organisations in an increasingly complex and competitive media landscape. Successful leaders will be expected to undertake a 30-week part-time, distance learning programme: MA/PGCert Journalism Innovation & Leadership and complete the applied learning projects for two modules that comprise the Postgraduate Certificate. Participants meet online once a week and join three one-week Intensive Study Blocks online and in-person in Feb, May and October 2024.

Successful applicants will have their full tuition fee paid for.
