History

The University of Illinois at Chicago, or UIC in short, is a public research university with its campus located adjacent to the Chicago loop. With over 33,000 students enrolled, it is the biggest university in Chicago. The university traces its roots to a number of private medical colleges that were founded in the 19th century.

In 1867, the University of Illinois was chartered in 1867 and the private medical colleges were affiliated with the university in 1896&ndash;97, getting fully incorporated in 1913. The university is classified as a &lsquo;R1: Doctoral Universities &ndash; Very high research activity&rsquo;.

On-campus facilities

On-campus accommodation is available to all students who apply to UIC. Students can fill and submit their housing application through the university website. There are various housing tours you can take virtually. Housing options include residential complexes, residence halls among others. You can also find costs and other details online.

Off-campus facilities

The Off-Campus Housing Service has a separate webpage which includes all the rental listings which you can track and earmark for later. You can also find assistance through Student Legal Services. Food facilities (Availability of vegetarian/Indian food)

Food facilities are available on-campus and also in the area around campus but the availability of Indian cuisine outlets become important for students who are studying abroad. Siri Indian restaurant and India House Restaurant are both great options in the campus vicinity if you are looking for Indian restaurants.

The university provides a range of resources and facilities to their students on the basis of their course and some, common for all students. The Research Resources Center (RRC) is equipped with high-end scientific equipment whereas the UIC Library provides all the resources you might need during your study at the university. Chicago is the most populated city in the state of Illinois and the third most populated city in the US. Incorporated in 1837, Chicago is located on the shore of Lake Michigan. Chicago suffered through a fire in 1871 which is called &lsquo;the Great Chicago Fire.&rsquo; The city was rebuilt and the construction efforts matched the population growth of the city.

Chicago is a world renowned tourist destination. The Navy Pier and Chicago Riverwalk are popular tourist destinations you can check out. The Chicago Cultural Center and the Museum Campus are great places that will allow you to know the city better. Two international airports are located close to the university campus. The O&#39;Hare International Airport is located 25 minutes away from campus whereas the Chicago Midway International Airport is located about 20 minutes away. Since the distance isn&rsquo;t much, you can pick either of these airports when you are travelling.

Nearby Subways and train stations

Quite a few subway stations are located around the campus. Illinois Medical District station is just 5 minutes away whereas the Polk and Western stations are both located about 7 minutes away. There are some bus stops located 7 minutes away from the campus location. Some bus stops include: Damen &amp; Polk and Taylor &amp; Damen.
