The University of Northern British Columbia formally came into existence on 22 june 1990 by Bill 40 of British Columbia legislature. It was officially opened in 1994 by Queen Elizabeth II. During its official opening it had 1500 students. The university got attention from the Northern Medical Program which was done in collaboration with the University of British Columbia.

1. Every graduate program will normally make one nomination for the Gold Medal.
2. The nomination must be made by, and supported by, the Chair of the Graduate Program or Graduate Committee if the student is enrolled in NRES, MCPMS, or IDIS.
3. Graduation GPA should normally be above 4.10.

Note: The GPA calculation will not include: transfer credit; any courses over and above the approved minimum degree requirements or otherwise taken as 'extra' to the degree; any courses that are below the degree level being attained (e.g. undergraduate courses taken during the course of a student's UNBC Master's or Doctoral degree)

Selection Committee:

The selection committee will comprise a representative of the Graduate Programs Office, the Deans of CASHS, CSAM and Regional Programs. The committee is chaired by the representative of the Graduate Programs Office.

Selection Critiera:

The nomination of the Graduate Program (or Committee) Chair will include an evaluation of the following criteria:
1. The result of the oral examination for project, thesis, or dissertation, which should normally be "Clear Pass.'
2. The quality of the project, thesis, or dissertation and the significance of the results.
3. The quantity and quality of publications and/or awards and/or conference presentations accrued during the nominee's time as a registered student at UNBC in the degree 
program for which s/he is being considered.

The GGM Review Committee will also consider/request the following information:
1. The decision of the oral examination and a list of the revisions required by the examining committee.
2. An evaluation by the external examiner, if available.
3. An independent review of the significance of the research.
4. The time taken to complete the graduate program.

Note: The weighting of specific criteria may differ according to the nature of the graduate degree (e.g. PhD, professional Master's) in order that every nominee is given the fairest consideration.
Tiebreaker:
In the event of a tie, the deciding vote will be that of:
1. The appropriate Dean of the College if the tied students are from the same College.
2. The representative of the Graduate Programs Office as Chair of the selection committee.

Governor General's Gold Medal

Donor: UNBC

Value: Half the value of the tuition fee units for the degree program into which the student has been accepted, renewable for one year.

Eligibility: The scholarship is provided to full-time students who have successfully competed for a national or provincial scholarship or fellowship equal or greater than 
$10,000. Students must remain in satisfactory academic standing to maintain the scholarship and must be judged to be making satisfactory progress by submitting a Progress 
Report to the Office of Graduate Programs prior to renewal.

Criteria: Recipient of a national or provincial scholarship or fellowship.

Application Instructions: If an applicant has successfully competed for a national or provincial scholarship or fellowship, the recipient should provide proof of the 
national/provincial award and contact the Office of Graduate Programs in order to also receive a UNBC Master's Tuition Scholarship.

UNBC Masters Tuition Scholarship

As a result of the construction of the WAC Bennett Dam, BC Hydro and the Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks established the Peace/Williston Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program. This program includes restoration and enhancement of fish and fish habitat, fish monitoring and inventories, as well as research. The Peace/Williston Fish and Wildlife Compensation Fish Technical Committee's mission is to provide naturally diverse and abundant fish populations in a healthy ecosystem. By establishing this award in partnership with UNBC, the Peace/Williston Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program strives to advance research on aquatic issues within the program's mandate area.

proposed research to further the understanding of fish and their habitat within the Williston Reservoir Watershed and will be subject to approval by a representative of the

This prestigious undergraduate award recognizes and rewards excellence through leadership in civic, athletic, philanthropic, and environmental fields. Recipients will have experience in leadership upon admission to UNBC and continuing on through their campus life through contributions to student life, undergraduate research, community outreach or other endeavors. With the President's contribution, this is now the highest value internally funded award made by UNBC.

Raven Scholarship

Elsie and Dieter (Derric) Gerdes were founding supporters of the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC). Elsie was President of the Interior University Society (IUS) from 1987-1989. She saw the need for young people to obtain higher education closer to home. In recognition of her vision to improve the lives of those in her community, she received an honorary Doctorate of Law from UNBC in 2004.

This bursary has been established in celebration of the life of Michael (Mike) Richard Strel. Mike's three years at UNBC, pursuing a double major in Mathematics and Physics, were a time of personal growth and fulfillment. His fascination with these subjects blossomed and he was excited about the possibility of a related career in teaching and research. In his personal life, of 21 years, Mike was known for his big smile and unique sense of humour, his deep love of family and close friends, his passion for mountaineering, his appreciation of classical music and his enthusiasm for learning to fly. This award is intended to carry forward the spirit of quiet determination and joy with which he lived his life.

The Gwyn Morgan and Patricia Trottier Foundation is a private foundation with a focus on education, notably in the field of engineering. Great West Life Scholarship

J. D. (Doug) Little, former Senior Vice President at Northwood Inc., was a strong advocate for the founding of UNBC. He was widely regarded as the father of the private tree nursery in BC, championing many of the silviculture and forest management methods used today. Mr. Little received the Association of British Columbia Professional Foresters Distinguished Statesman Award for his outstanding efforts to assure better care of the forest.

Number: Two (one for a student in third-year studies, one for a student in fourth-year studies), subject to the availability of funds.

Eligibility: Available to full-time students who have completed at least 60 credit hours towards a degree program offered by the Faculty of Natural Resources and 
Environmental Studies and who have declared a major in Forestry.

Criteria: Academic proficiency with a minimum 3.00 grade point average, demonstrated leadership in the classroom and in the field, and a superior work ethic.

future forest management activities via awards@unbc.ca.

Doug Little Scholarship

The Marumi Sangyo Group, based in Nagoya, Japan, dates back to 1948 when they established a small lumber company dealing just in domestic lumber and finally moving into building and land development. Since 1990, Marumi has been a major importer of forest products from northern BC, with which it is building close ties. The scholarships are a fitting way of helping express these ties as the company moves into its 50th anniversary year.

Coastal Gaslink Legacy Scholarship

The intent of the van Adrichem Undergraduate Summer Research Bursary is to provide financial support to a third or fourth year undergraduate student pursuing summer research projects. Mr. van Adrichem believes that giving students the opportunity to experience research at the undergraduate level will enhance their education and spark a lifetime interest in research, increasing the likelihood of continuing on with research at the graduate level. Michael van Adrichem was an active horticultural researcher in northern British Columbia. He spent fifteen years in the Prince George research branch of the Federal Department of Agriculture, where his main emphasis was on the winter hardiness of raspberries. This award, the first endowed undergraduate research bursary at UNBC, will assist in the enhancement of knowledge about plant biological processes in the north.

Dr. McTaggart Cowan, a professor emeritus at the University of British Columbia, dedicated a lifetime to studying, teaching, and conserving the natural resources of British Columbia. Recognized throughout the world as the Dean of Canadian Zoology, this scholarship in Wildlife Management is a fitting testament to his ideals and distinguished service to the people and resources of this province.

Chan Sisters Foundation Undergraduate Award

Dr. Tony Eckersley was always enthusiastic about medicine and enjoyed contact with a wide variety of people. He worked hard to develop good quality care for his patients in General Practice. He appreciated working in the north because he could be involved in maternity, surgical and emergency medicine. In fact, he left Scotland because those avenues were being closed to family practitioners.

Canfor Legacy Award

The Peter Bentley Athletic Scholarship endowment was established in honour of Mr. Bentley, who served as Chancellor of UNBC from May 2004 through May 2007. Peter was an avid supporter of athletics throughout his life and was an accomplished athlete himself, having been inducted into the British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame in 1999. Proceeds from the endowment are to be equally divided between Men's and Women's Athletics.

Mervin Holder was a kind and generous man who lived his life in Prince George through hard work and the enjoyment of people around him. Chemistry Award of Excellence

Miriam Wolfe has established this award in memory of her brother, Earl Johnson. Their relationship with UNBC began in the late 80s as a result of a chance meeting during their summer drive from Oregon to Alaska. She and Earl were having lunch in Prince George and were "accosted" by a group of young people screaming "only five dollars, please, only five dollars". After receiving an explanation of the request, Earl and Miriam were pleased to discover they were playing a part in the birth of UNBC. Twenty-five years later Miriam and Earl, long-time donors, are included as two of the founding '16,000' who signed the petition that made UNBC a reality.

Earl Johnson Memorial Scholarship

Joselito (Lito) Arocena (1959-2015) was a founding faculty member and UNBC's first Canada Research Chair, in Soil and Environmental Sciences. Husband, father, mentor, scholar, colleague, and Filipino, Lito was universally loved and is greatly missed by all who knew him. This award was established by his family, friends and UNBC as a tribute to his memory.

The Asper Family Foundation continues to support students in the advancement of communications studies in BC institutions.

The Asper Bursary

H.B. (Herb) Osen Endowed Bursary. This Bursary has been established by Brian and Jackie Brownridge to recognize a great businessman and friend. Herb Osen was a founding partner of the TOS Insurance Group, based in Burnaby, BC, which he built into one of the premier insurance brokerage firms in Canada. Recognized by colleagues and employees alike as an industry leader, he provided opportunities to all those that worked with him. He established a standard for business ethics that we would all be proud to follow. Following the establishment of the award, Herb Osen and his family, as well as a number of colleagues in the insurance industry, have chosen to enhance this bursary which was endowed in 2000.
