It was established in 1901 as a municipal training college. It began with four departments and 671 students. In 1908, Sunderland Teacher training college was established. In 1969, Sunderland Polytechnic was established and Technical college, the school of art, got incorporated.
After the passage of the Further and Higher Education Art 1992, it gained University status. Sunderland was the first polytechnic university to create a part-time, in service BEd programme in the country.

Facilities: There are two campuses in Sunderland, one in Hong Kong and one in London. University provides accommodation facilities for its students and has four halls of residence. Facilities provided by university includes:

2. There is a crime security team deployed on campus, which constantly keeps patrolling and operates the University-wide CCTV Network which is monitored from a dedicated control centre.
