In 1595, a school called Merchant Ventures was established which became Merchant Venture Technical College. After few years University of Bristol was formed which in turn became University of West England.
Technical college then became Polytechnic in 1970. The institution got university status and its present name in the year 1992 as a result of the Further and Higher Education Act, 1992.
