Roots of the university can be traced in the construction of Royal Polytechnic Institution which was built in the year 1837. Polytechnic formally received the royal charter in the year 1839. It is a home to the first photographic portrait studio in Europe which was built in the year 1841. In September 1881, Royal Polytechnic was closed, initiating a new era of educational development. Present building at 309 Regent Street was built in 1910-1912.
As the university expanded, it introduced new subjects for students. Later Holborn College of Law, Languages and Commerce was merged with Regan Street Polytechnic to form the Polytechnic of Central London (PCL). PCL was re-designated as the University of Westminster following the Further and Higher Education Act, 1992. Facts: 1. The motto of the university is “The Lord is our Strength”. 2. It operates the Westminster International University in Tashkent in Uzbekistan. 3. University of Westminster is incorporated under the Companies Act as a charity. 4.
