Valparaiso University (Valpo) is a private university in Valparaiso, Indiana. It is a Lutheran university with about 4,500 students from over 50 countries on a campus of 350 acres (140&nbsp;ha).

Valpo has five undergraduate colleges, a graduate school, and a law school. It is home to the second-largest collegiate chapel in the world, the Chapel of the Resurrection.

Originally named Valparaiso Male and Female College, Valparaiso University was founded in 1859 as one of the first coeducation colleges in the United States. Due to reverses brought about by the Civil War, the college was forced to close in 1871. Two years later it was revived by educator Henry Baker Brown and named Northern Indiana Normal School and Business Institute. At the turn of the 20th century, Brown changed the college&#39;s name to Valparaiso College, and soon after it was rechartered as Valparaiso University. Initially founded by Methodists, the Lutheran University Association purchased it in 1925. The Association continues to operate it today.

Financial Aid

The Valpo campus size is 350 acres; the campus is divided into two sections, the Old Campus and the New Campus. The old campus started a restoration project in 2009 after acts of vandalism against the buildings. The Old Campus is home to the Wesemann Hall and Heritage Hall which are the buildings from the School of Law. Also, the Old Campus is home to the Lesbien Hall, which is the building from the College of Nursing and Health Professions. It is worth to mention that the Old Campus is the site of Valpo&#39;s Doppler weather radar, some fraternities and the Cultural Center. The New Campus is home to most of the academic buildings and at the center of the campus is located the famous Chapel of Resurrection, a 98 foot building built on the highest elevation of land on the campus known for being a Northwest Indiana landmark. The Christopher Center Library is also located on the New Campus and it houses over 500,000 books. Another great building is the Center of the Arts known as VUCA, which offers multiple performances rooms and the Brauer Museum of Art.
