Kwantlen Polytechnic University started out as&nbsp; Kwantlen college in 1981. It was formed by the separation from Douglas College and there was a contest conducted to choose the new name for the institution. In 1988, it was renamed the university, and later In 1995, the college was allowed to offer degrees in its own name.&nbsp;

The university got its current name Kwantlen Polytechnic University on April 22, 2008, by the announcement of British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell, and later on October 24 in the same year, it became a member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC).
