It was established in 1901 as a municipal training college. It began with four departments and 671 students. In 1908, Sunderland Teacher training college was established. In 1969, Sunderland Polytechnic was established and Technical college, the school of art, got incorporated.
After the passage of the Further and Higher Education Art 1992, it gained University status. Sunderland was the first polytechnic university to create a part-time, in service BEd programme in the country. Facts: 1. It was established with “Sweetly Absorbing Knowledge”. 2. Clanny House is the largest halls of residence of the university. 3. It was the first university to offer sandwich courses. 4. It has affiliations with Association of Commonwealth Universities, EQUIS, Universities UK, Coalition of Modern Universities, Million+. 5. It was one of the 6 universities to be short-listed for ‘ University of the Year’.

On-campus facilities: Citycentre campus is located in the heart of the city and has sports facilities. One building even has Murray Library, Priestman Building, and Hope Street Xchange, a contemporary workspace for innovation-led businesses and entrepreneurial projects. Science complex has an outstanding multi-million pound, industry-compatible science and health facility. Shackleton House is a home to psychology, Paramedic Sciences and Nursing, and this complex has- Mock wards, consultation rooms, mock patient-transfer suite, Industry-standard positive pressure isolation room, patient diagnostic suite, state-of-the-art simulation facilities. Off-campus facilities: Students who are not able to find accommodation in the university can find private accommodation outside the university. There are many food-outlets, cafes, restaurants available in the city. There are many places to visit in the city. Overall Sunderland is a good place to stay.
